Saratoga Springs NY photographer documentary project of New York State Craft Brewing
Working for the Brew Central NY campaign fits well into my skill set as a Saratoga Springs NY photographer.
The campaign seeks to raise awareness of, and boost tourism through, craft brewing and distilling in New York state. To that end, I’ve documented dozens of micro breweries and craft distilleries throughout the state.
This particular shoot day involved traveling to and photographing the Fly Creek Cider Mill, the Cooperstown Brewing company and the Cooperstown Distillery. During my time as a student at Syracuse University’s SI Newhouse School of Public Communications, I learned how to shoot photo essays by creating several stories based on craftsmen. And that training has served me well through my decades going career as so many people are ultimately craftsmen in one way or another.
But the true soul of a craftsman has risen in New York state as people of all ages and all backgrounds have been drawn to the age old arts of brewing and distilling. Covering their stories for this campaign fits perfectly with who I am as a photographer.
The creative brief was to get one “hero shot” of each brewer or distiller which could be used in a national advertising campaign. As the time on each site was very tight, the secondary goal was to get as much done documenting the operations and hopefully capturing a little bit of the soul of each location.
These images were from a single shoot day.
